At just 20 years old, Eva Marija is immersing herself in Eurovision history as the contest marks its 70th anniversary this year.
One of her earliest and most impactful memories is without a doubt the 2009 victory of Norway’s Alexander Rybak. His folk-inspired song Fairy Tale left a lasting impression and even inspired her to learn the violin.
But for RTL, the young artist has now also dived into earlier decades of the competition, some of which she was not familiar with. Stepping into a Eurovision time machine, Marija highlights performances from France Gall and Vicky Leandros, both closely linked to Luxembourg’s Eurovision legacy.
The young violinist also paid tribute to music legend Céline Dion, who won the contest for Switzerland in 1988, by performing a cover of Ne partez pas sans moi.
Among more recent performances, Eva Marija pointed to Portugal’s Salvador Sobral, who won in 2017. She recalled his emotional performance following heart surgery, describing it as deeply touching and moving.
Eva Marija is set to perform her song Mother Nature in the Eurovision semi-final on 14 May in Vienna, with hopes of qualifying for the final two days later. Ahead of the contest, she will appear at several Eurovision pre-parties, including events in Amsterdam (AFAS Arena) this weekend and in London next week for the London Eurovision Festival and the London Eurovision Party.
