With a calendar of festive screenings and insightful talks, all sure to delight cinephiles during the darkest days of the year, the month of December at Cinémathèque Luxembourg promises to not disappoint.

Cat Krettels, head of communications for Cinémathèque, joined Melissa Dalton from the Home Stretch on Today Radio to present the cinema’s upcoming programme - an exciting blend of classic retrospectives, celebratory screenings honouring iconic personalities, and a spotlight on female filmmakers.

From an homage to comedy-of-manners auteur Whit Stillman, to reviews of William Friedkin’s ‘70s classics, to a continuation of Brad Pitt’s birthday celebrations - Cinémathèque embraces both the broad and the indie-savvy for those looking for films outside the ‘holiday sphere’.

For those who do crave more holiday action: Cinémathèque slides into the festive season with timeless classics like ‘A Christmas Carol’ (1938), Will Ferrell’s inimitable ‘Elf’ (2003), 1944 German comedy ‘Die Feuerzangenbowle’ (‘The Punch Bowl’), and not-for-kiddos holiday horror gem ‘Gremlins’ (1984).

On 18 December, they’ve also organised an exclusive party honouring Brad Pitt’s 60th birthday - with a special screening of ‘Inglorious Basterds’ (2009) to boot.

In a first for the institution, the cinema will also be open between Christmas and New Year’s, due to great demand.

But the activities don’t stop in December: acclaimed Italian film director and producer Luca Guadagnino - most recently of ‘Call Me by Your Name’ (2017), ‘Suspira’ (2018), and ‘Bones and All’ (2022) fame - will curate a number of special screenings in January.

Listen to the full interview here - and find out if Brad Pitt was tempted to spend his 60th birthday in the Grand Duchy.
