In a ceremony open to the public, a plaque commemorating a new European Film Academy honour for Cinémathèque was unveiled on Monday 11 March by the Mayor of Luxembourg, Madame Lydie Polfer, and actress Vicky Krieps.
The Cinémathèque theatre is a cultural treasure nestled just a stone’s throw from the city fortresses that separate Ville Haute from the Petrusse Valley. While this is something residents and visitors to nightlife (and matinee-life) in Luxembourg have long known, this past September the European Film Academy (EFA) officially designated the theatre a ‘Treasure of European Film Culture’:
“Treasures are historic places linked to the history of cinema, as well as famous film locations that should be preserved for the future. The Academy cited the Cinémathèque de la Ville de Luxembourg's 'ongoing dedication to the preservation and promotion of international film heritage' as the reason for its inclusion."
The event was open to the public and followed by a screening of Kriep’s critically acclaimed 2022 film Corsage.
Boyd van Hoeij from Cinémathèque joined Today Radio's Melissa Dalton to chat about this exciting announcement, along with the cinema’s upcoming program. Across March and April, the cinema has planned a Marlon Brando retrospective for the legendary actor's centenary (he was born on April 3, 1924) which will run through March and into April, including a screening on 35mm of Apocalypse Now Redux.
They'll also screen Almodovar’s latest short, 2023’s Strange Way of Life, as a ‘gay cowboy double bill’ alongside Ang Lee’s 2005 classic Brokeback Mountain.

Finally, for Easter Weekend, the cinema has organised a 'Weekend of Oz' with screenings of The Wizard of Oz (1939) in three different languages (English, French, German) plus a special screening of the beloved 'Motown version' of the same story: The Wiz (1978) starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. Despite its initial failure, the film has resounded as a 'cult classic' among audiences across the last few decades.
