Marc Graas, known professionally as a psychiatrist, has been pursuing his passion for the arts for around five years, balancing his medical career with a growing body of creative work. His latest exhibition, "De la vertu du ridicule", opened on Sunday at the Valentiny Foundation and features 36 vibrant and, at times, surreal paintings alongside a series of striking red sculptures. The works display whimsical scenes populated by people, animals, and architectural forms, offering a playful perspective that invites viewers to see the lighter side of life.

Graas notes that art has always played a role in his family, especially since his father was a painter. However, he never dared to paint until his father's passing, something which he now regrets because he never got to discuss painting with him. Graas adds that while he used to write novels, he only started painting five or six years ago.

In his work as a psychiatrist, Graas often encounters suffering and hardship, but he sees it as part of his job to bring moments of joy and laughter to his patients. This philosophy extends to his art, where he processes the emotional aspects of his professional life and seeks to capture the joy of helping others. He emphasises the importance of not taking life too seriously.

The exhibition's title, "De la vertu du ridicule", expresses Graas's belief that there is value in embracing the ridiculous. "I believe that the ridiculous can be an advantage, because when you allow yourself to be ridiculous, you are also free", he explained.

Painting has become a source of relaxation for Graas, allowing him to relieve stress and escape into different worlds. Working primarily with acrylics and chalk, he often draws inspiration from current events, reflecting on the issues that occupy his mind. However, many of his creative ideas emerge spontaneously.

The exhibition "De la vertu du ridicule" by Marc Graas will be on display at the Valentiny Foundation until 21 June.
