Artist Jonas Ademes's design for a monument in honour of Grand Duke Jean has been selected from several submissions and is scheduled for inauguration in mid-2027. The bronze sculpture will be installed in Luxembourg City's Pescatore park and will depict the late Grand Duke in civilian clothing.
The Ministry of State announced that Ademes had won the competition to design the monument.
According to the jury, the project stood out for its artistic quality and its human portrayal of the former head of state. It was this human aspect – depicting Grand Duke Jean not as a monarch, but as the person behind the title – that distinguished the proposal from other submissions, the jury explained.
The sculpture is to be installed between the Pescatore Foundation and the panoramic lift in the park. It will face towards the park, with a view towards Côte d'Eich, Fort Thüngen, the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art (MUDAM), and Kirchberg in the background.
Ademes, who is originally from Bitburg in Germany and has family ties to the Grand Duchy, is expected to work on the monument over the coming months. The artist reportedly maintained close personal ties to the former head of state.
The inauguration is planned for mid-2027.
