Photographs have the power to transport us instantly to another time. At a glance, details such as clothing, landscapes, and photographic styles can reveal the period in which an image was taken.
Visitors entering the Ratskeller at Cercle Cité are greeted by precisely this kind of imagery. The exhibition brings together black-and-white and colour photographs that immediately invite viewers to step into the worlds they depict. Entitled More Than a Postcard, the exhibition explores the history and imagery of tourism.
The Luxembourg City Photothèque's archive contains around seven million photographs documenting the history and development of Luxembourg.
The entire Photothèque team worked together to select the images for the exhibition. Keven Erickson was responsible for digitising the photographs.
The images on display are not originals, but prints produced from the negatives. Strong contrasts between light and dark can be particularly difficult to reproduce from older negatives, and some details may also have been lost over the years.
The exhibition is spread across two locations. The full photographic series can be viewed at the Ratskeller at Cercle Cité and at the Passerelle near Luxembourg Central Station until 20 September. Further information is available here.
