Do you know how to fill in an accident statement correctly? We'll explain to you how to best proceed, so that you are well prepared in the event of a car accident. An incorrectly completed accident statement can lead to questions of liability or delays in settling claims.

Keep calm

Whether it's a major or minor accident, you're often in a state of shock. The most important thing is that you are out of danger before you fill in the report. Stand behind the guardrail or move away from the road, put on a high-visibility vest, and set up the warning triangle.

Precise information

Fill in the report as accurately as possible. At the top of the report, general information on the date, time, injured parties, and any possible witnesses is requested.

In the next section, you must fill in columns A and B the respective details of the car, driver, insurance company, etc. for the two parties involved. It doesn't matter whose details are in which column. Remember to check the accuracy of the data entered by the other party. To clarify the course of the accident, make a sketch and indicate the damage to the cars with arrows. It is also advisable to take photographs and send them to your insurer.

The middle column serves to describe the circumstances of the accident. Most cases can be explained by ticking the boxes. If not, specify the circumstances of the accident under "my remarks."

The signature

Once the statement has been completed and checked by both parties, you can sign it. Please note that nothing can be changed on the first page once it has been signed.

If you do not agree with what is written on the certificate, you must not sign it, even if someone is urging you to do so. The insurance companies will then try to settle the liability issue later.

Good to know

One certificate consists of two originals. The first page is automatically transferred to the second page by the pressure of the pen as it is filled in. This means that each party has an identical copy to give to their insurer. Only one statement needs to be completed per accident. If several vehicles are involved, one statement must be completed with each party involved in the damage caused. In the event of a chain accident, this means that one statement must be completed with the car in front of you and another with the car behind you.

Even on holiday

If you're travelling in Europe with your own car or a hire car, you should also have an accident report with you. The one you know from Luxembourg is valid throughout Europe.
