The Archdiocese of Luxembourg has been publishing numbers of victims of sexual abuse within church institutions since 2019.
Eleven people contacted the church in 2021 - 3 women and 8 men - relating to abuse as far back as 1940.
Most cases reported to the Catholic Church hotline are from the 1960s and 1970s. This is also reflected in the numbers from 2021.
The most recent reported case is from 2009. The presumed perpetrator is a pastor who has since died, said vicar general Patrick Muller.
The eleven cases have been passed on to the prosecution, but legal consequences are unlikely. There are no plans to close down the hotline, said Muller, and the Catholic Church would welcome it if the government offered an independent point of contact for victims.
The Church has hired a representative for prevention to help stop abuses before they happen, and introduced staff training. So far it is impossible to say how much this is helping.
Around 60 sexual abuse cases have been processed to date. There are no current plans for a large independent study such as the one recently done in Germany, where the circumstances of abuse cases were analysed in order to find out who was aware of what was going on.
The Catholic Church in Luxembourg continues to offer a service where victims can report abuse within church institutions, either by telephone at (+352) 621 676 349 or by email at fir-iech-do@cathol.lu.
