CoronavirusNew variants spread more rapidly, explains Dr Thomas Dentzer

Carine Lemmer
The virologist from the Health Directorate spoke to our colleagues on RTL Radio on Tuesday morning.

Up to 6,000 vaccine doses were administered on a daily basis last week, out of which about 1,000 were first jabs. Dr Dentzer thus believes that the new measures are starting to bear fruit, even though there remain people who are still not willing to get vaccinated.

The virologist elaborated on the complex logistics necessary to keep several vaccination centres open, which was especially challenging at the beginning of the year when deliveries were hard to come by. In the near future, GPs will be able to also administer the Moderna vaccine.

Dr Dentzer also addressed the new Omicron variant as Luxembourg has recorded its first confirmed case. Although it seems as though the variant is less threatening than previously anticipated, it is still more contagious, which may provoke new infection clusters all of a sudden.

Finally, the virologist also spoke about the importance of continued testing in light of the national campaign this week. Even though rapid tests are flawed, they can still help identify positive cases early on and thereby help break infection chains.
