Since 31 July, France has divided the authorised quantity of tobacco its residents can bring with them from abroad by four.

Limits on tobacco

Since 31 July, a French decree limits the quantity of tobacco French citizens can bring back with them from abroad, no matter where they buy it. Here are the new limits:

  • 200 cigarettes (previously 800)
  • 100 cigarillos (previously 400)
  • 50 cigars (previously 200)
  • 250 g of smoking tobacco (previously 1 kg)

These caps apply to both individual and collective transport. Residents of France may buy higher quantities domestically, however, a document must prove the products' origin.

French residents continue to buy tobacco in Luxembourg

Limits on alcohol

Similar to tobacco, there are a number of limitations in place which regulate the amount of alcohol EU citizens can buy in other EU member states for personal use.

A person (18 or older) is allowed to bring back 10 litres of spirits (liquors like vodka, whisky, rum…), 20 litres of liqueur wine (Martini, Port wine…), 90 litres of wine (with a maximum of 60 in the case of sparkling wines), and 110 litres of beer.

Limits on fuel

In addition to the amount in their vehicle's tank, a person is allowed to transport a maximum of 10 litres of fuel in a portable container. This rule applies to any type of motorised vehicle.

Limits on coffee, tea, perfume...

For all other types of merchandises, including perfume, coffee, or tea, a person can carry goods for a maximum value of €300 per person, or €430 per person in the case of travel by air or sea. In some EU member states a lower limit of €150 applies for individuals younger than 15.
