The two teams from Luxembourg were eliminated in the first qualifying round for the Europa League.
After the clear victory of Niederkorn against FK Zeta (3-0), Luxembourg football fans hoped that Differdange and Pétange would follow the example of their rivals from the south.
Unfortunately, Thursday evening gave Luxembourgish football fans little reason to celebrate.
Differdange was dominated in Bosnia by the players from Zrinjski Mostar who not only completely took over the ball but also managed to score three goals against the team from Luxembourg who was simply not up to the challenge on Thursday evening. The Bosnians thus move on to the second round of the Europa League qualifiers.
Pétange, who discovered who they were playing against during the week, travelled to Gibraltar but never seemed to be able to take control of the game.
The Lincoln Red Imps scored on the half-hour mark and decided the match during extra time (2-0, 90+2) even though Pétange tried everything to get back into the game.
All in all, it was a bad night for Luxembourgish football as two of the clubs hoping for a place in the Europa League were eliminated.
All of the hopes of the Grand Duchy's football fans now lie on Niederkorn, who hope to repeat Dudelange's feat and qualify for the group stages of the Europa League.
There is still a long way to go...
