Trier's iconic Porta Nigra turned 1,850 this Sunday!
The impressive Roman city gate is the largest of its kind north of the Alps and features on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list.
The name originated in the Middle Ages and is due to the darkened colour of its stone.
In Roman times, it was part of a system comprising four gates and a large city wall.
Around 250,000 visitors venture into the building each year.
