Outgoing European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker was almost reduced to tears last Friday as he bade farewell at his last European Council summit.

With breaking voice, Juncker expressed his gratitude to European Council President Donald Tusk and the assembled media for the five years he headed the European commission.

Overcome by emotion, Luxembourg's former Prime Minister concluded by saying: "I will always be proud, until the end of my life, for having served Europe."

New European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen will officially take over on 1 December.
