The French government plans to replace the traditional barrier system on motorways with automatic scanners.

Similar systems have been put in place in Germany and Belgium for lorries, and in Portugal for cars. Instead of paying at a toll gate, vehicle licence plates will be scanned and saved.

First test runs will be carried out in 2019 on France's A4 motorway between Metz and Strasbourg for example. Drivers using the "Télépéage" system will not experience any changes, but all other drivers will now have the options to pay by smartphone or to have their bill sent home.

The aim is to improve traffic flow in busy areas.
