Following the tragic accident at the Winterlights Festival at Place Guillaume II on 24 November 2019, the Luxembourg Court of Appeal has now ruled that ten defendants must appear in court.

At the time of the incident, the toddler was so severely injured by fragments of the ice sculpture that he died at the scene. In late November this year, Emran’s parents spoke to RTL, revealing that they had spent six years waiting for answers regarding their child’s death.

Among those charged are the sculptors of the statue, the non-profit organisation Luxembourg City Tourist Office, individual staff members of the association, and several employees of the City of Luxembourg.

These nine individuals and the organisation will be required to answer in court for the boy’s death. The trial is expected to take place next summer at the earliest.

The proceedings will focus on the charge of involuntary manslaughter.

As with any investigation, the presumption of innocence applies until a court delivers its verdict.
