A new report by STATEC gives some updated insight into the Grand Duchy's most populous towns and cities.

Unsurprisingly, Luxembourg City is right at the top of Luxembourg's most populous towns and cities, and has been for a long time. The last census revealed that around 124,500 people live in the Grand Duchy's capital.

In second place, and quite some distance behind Luxembourg City, is Esch-sur-Alzette with 36,200 inhabitants. Esch is followed by the municipalities of Differdange, Dudelange, and Pétange. No surprises here, as the five most populous towns and cities in Luxembourg remain the same.

What is worth pointing out, however, is that all of these communes have recorded a substantial demographic increase over the past years. For example, Luxembourg City has welcomed just over 15,000 new residents in just two years (109,200 inhabitants in 2019).

While not quite as spectacular, the other four communes have also recorded increases in their local populations. Esch has welcomed 600 new residents since 2019. For Differdange it's 900 (36,200 in 2021), 400 for Dudelange (27,900), and 900 in the case of Pétange (20,100).

Another factoid to note: except for the capital, all of Luxembourg's most populous towns and cities are in the south of the country. And they all record a substantial demographic increase.

These figures were drawn from the latest volume of 'Le Luxembourg en chiffres' ("Luxembourg in Numbers"), published by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC).
