On Monday, the deadline for the petition demanding two days off work per month for women who get their period came to a conclusion.
With a total of 4,846 signatures, the petition gathered more than enough support to be discussed in the Chamber of Deputies. Petition author Ornalla Romito considers it a confirmation that the issue needs to be addressed in the public sphere.
The Union of Luxembourg Enterprises (UEL) has already commented on the initiative, noting that many details still have to be figured out. Director Jean-Paul Olinger explained that, for instance, everybody is already legally allowed to stay home due to unwellness.
Furthermore, it will have to be regulated how the days off are to be financially compensated. Olinger underlined that if every woman were to make use of those two days every month, work capacity would decline by 10%.
