The heavy rains seen last weekend will become more frequent.

This is the conclusion of the experts from the Luxembourg Institute for Science and Technology (List) and the water authority. The country will likely change to a mediterranean climate, which means flooding in summer will increase.

The water authority issued a map created through a simulation, which shows high risk areas. The new flood risk management plan will be presented at the end of the month, including a detailed analysis of the recent incidents, says Luc Zwank, deputy director of the water authority.

The maps can be found on the Geoportail. They can be helpful for citizens, but also municipalities, for instance for construction projects.

As these heavy rains are becoming more frequent, they are also of interest to Luxembourgish researchers. Samples taken in Pontpierre are being analysed at the List in order to understand what happened in Reckange-sur-Mess, says Laurent Pfister, hydrologist at the List.
