Polfer launched an appeal to the government to demand a higher police presence in the streets of the capital.

Mayor Polfer referred to the series of aggressions and thefts that occurred in Luxembourg City over the weekend, most notably a gang of three robbers who stole jewellery from people's necks. Polfer lamented the absence of police officers in the streets, who she believes to have a discouraging effect on potential criminals.

"I do not want to see anything more dramatic happen, like the things we occasionally hear about from our neighbouring countries", Polfer concluded.

The Luxembourg City mayor further announced that she has signed contracts with more private security firms, which means that additional guards will begin patrolling in town from 15 May for a period of six months.

"However, only the police has the power to make formal interventions", Mayor Polfer underlined.
