In 2019 and 2020, 41 people requested euthanasia or assisted suicide in Luxembourg, according to the report of the National Control Commission. This is almost double the number of previous years.
The National Commission for the Check and Evaluation of the Application of the Law of 16 March 2009 submitted its sixth report to the Chamber of Deputies on Monday.
The Commission received 16 declarations of euthanasia in 2019 and 25 in 2020. "Twice as many as in previous years (i.e. 11 in 2017 and 8 in 2018)," according to the Chamber of Deputies' website. The average age of the patients who wished to make use of this service is between 60 and 79 years.
The most common diseases for which this choice is made are cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
The number of euthanasia procedures performed in hospitals rose from 3 in 2019 to 12 in 2020.
According to the Commission, the significant increase particularly in 2020 is in part due to a greater awareness of both the existence of the law and the acceptance of the law by the population.
