Due to the pandemic, this year's commemorative ceremony was reduced to a symbolic gesture with a tree being planted in Dommeldange to remember those affected by the virus.

For the first time since the global awareness day has been followed in the Grand Duchy, no free condoms were distributed.

In the past year, the country has seen 49 new HIV infections. Most of those stem from sexual intercourse in the heterosexual community.

Experts believe that currently around 1,200 people who contracted the virus live in Luxembourg, out of which 15% are not aware of the disease.
