Each year for Valentine's Day, Eurostat publishes statistics on the number of marriages per 1,000 inhabitants in the EU member states.
Luxembourg is somewhat less romantically inclined than others... dropping from penultimate place in 2017 (3.2 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants), the Grand Duchy is now in last place, with 3.1 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants in 2018.
The figures show that marriage is on the decline, while divorce is on the rise... however, civil partnerships, or PACS, remain popular in the Grand Duchy, and are not counted in the statistics.
The other two lowest marriage rates were recorded in Italy (3.2) and Portugal (3.4), followed by Spain, France and Slovenia (all 3.5).
Conversely, the countries with the highest number of marriages in relation to the population were Cyprus (7.8 marriages per 1,000 population), Romania (7.4), Lithuania (7.0) and Latvia ( 6.8). Next are Malta (5.8), Slovakia (5.7) and Denmark (5.6).
