All decisions about hospital parking fees are the responsibility of the hospital.
Health minister Lydia Mutsch responded to criticisms denouncing far too expensive hospital parking rates by saying that the ministry does not have the authority to interfere.
Last week, the Luxembourg consumers union (ULC) had criticised the drastic price increases and invited hospital management to review their pricing policy in the interest of patients and visitors. The organisation considered nine euros for three hours of parking to be excessive.
The minister further explained that the rules could vary from one hospital to another, saying that some hospitals had opted to completely outsource the management of their parking. In others cases, dialysis or chemotherapy patients are entitled to a flat fee rate. In some hospitals, visitors are awarded a special fixed-term price when visiting patients over a long period of time.
The ministry's message clear: it stays away from this issue because it is a decision that is the sole responsibility of hospitals.
