On 1 October 2023, we honour all fathers and father figures in our lives. Here are some activities to do together on this sunny appreciation day!
Is it just me or did we collectively forget to prep the public for this year's Father's Day? I haven't heard anything on radio, nor seen any marketing in stores or cafés.
Except for this morning: I was on my way to do my weekly grocery shopping (a dreadful activity when you have to do it at Cactus on a Sunday morning - if you know, you know) and was taken aback by the stacks of cakes welcoming me at the entrance to the store. That's when it hit me: Today is Father's Day!
While most countries celebrate on the 3rd Sunday in June, fathers' day is always on the first Sunday of October in the Grand-duchy. Today is the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with your dad (or any father figure in fact) and show appreciation for all they do.
For those among us who came unprepared - like me - here are some activities to consider doing with your father on this wonderfully sunny Sunday.
Gather the family and EAT

Come together for a barbeque in the garden/on the balcony. Or just bring finger food if no barbeque space is available. Having family around is your best shot of making dad feel appreciated today.
Go for a bike ride

The entire family can get some exercise with a bike ride on Father's Day. Grab some quick finger foods, bikes and helmets, maybe even a bottle of wine and have a picnic once you reach your destination. Or if biking is not your cup of tea, just take a stroll through the next parc. Get some movement in!
Perform a concert

If you know how to sing or play an instrument, consider performing a song for them. No matter if it's his favourite movie soundtrack or an original tune, a small music break after the barbeque will let your dad know how special he is to you. He might even have a trick or two up his sleeve and you might end up having a whole musical afternoon together!
Help dad wash the car

If anything, this year's perfect weather on Father's Day is the best opportunity to help dad with a car wash. To make it a bit more fun for kids - and the 'cool' adults - , you could even fill up some water balloons and grab some water guns to turn it into a water fight.
Handmade cards and crafts

Most children will have crafted something in school for today, but if for any reason at all yours didn't, let them sit down with dad to create a special gift. Not only for dad but also for your kid, this time will be cherished for a long time after. For adult kids: Have you ever heard of prank cards?

Whatever you do today, let's keep in mind that the greatest gift we can offer our dads is the gift of time. Whether it's over a cup of coffee, a walk in the park, or simply sharing stories, this day is all about the moments we create together.
