Welcome to the weekend! Start the new year with a classical or blues concert, sign kids up to STEM classes, be inspired at Expo Creativ or go for a hike.

1. Pick your New Year's concert

The first Sunday after 1 January is traditionally dedicated to New Year's concerts. There's a wide selection available already: Listen to the percussion ensembles of the City Conservatory in the morning, see the Luxembourg Chamber Orchestra at Artikuss at 5pm, or head up north to Echternach for the local Harmonie Municipale at 8pm. They each offer a varied musical programme.

To be added is that all proceeds of the gig at the conservatory go to Fondatioun Kriibskrank Kanner, the foundation supporting children with cancer.

2. Do recycling experiments

This Science Club workshop introduces teenagers to recycling, the various types of materials and how they are reusable. The day involves plenty of chemistry and physics experiments! Make sure to sign up in advance via the link above.

3. Be inspired at Expo Creativ

For all things handwork, handicrafts and creative design, head over the LuxExpo this weekend for Expo Creativ. Open for three days, there are stands and exhibits on wool, fabrics, embroidery, scrapbooking, beads, stamps, papers, haberdashery and so much more. This will be a great spot to be inspired, engage with other creatives or exchange ideas on the next DIY design.

4. Take the train for a circular walk

Luxembourg's public transport is free, so here's a great way to make use of the offering: A circular walk that starts and ends at a train station! There's a whole bunch of these walks - the whole list can be found here. Ranging from short 5km trails to 11-hour walks, there's something in here for everyone!

5. Watch Raiders of the Lost Ark

Archaeology professor Indiana Jones ventures to seize a biblical artefact known as the Ark of the Covenant. While doing so, he puts up a fight against Renee and a troop of Nazis. A real Steven Spielberg action-adventure classic!

6. Register kids to life skills workshops

Kids Life Skills aims to bring children closer to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Every Sunday, there's a 3-hour workshop for children between 7-10 years old. They are now open for registrations and for January include an initiation workshop (explore robots and coding), introduction to Minecraft (problem solving, creativity), building a sustainable city in Minecraft and creating mazes. Bringing your own laptop is required.

7. Hear double blues night

Fred Barreto Group & Heavy Petrol are playing in Beaufort on Friday. The first is led by Brazilian star guitarist (you could have guessed it) Fred Barreto, who interweaves some solid rock energy with bluesy vibes. Heavy Petrol is inspired by the greats like Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter and Joe Bonamassa. What an evening!
