The beautiful town of Echternach offers far more than one might expect based on its size.
Echternach is perhaps best known for it's annual hopping procession, which was cancelled this year due to the coronavirus. But there's a whole lot to explore beyond this Unesco-certified tradition.
The town is home to the Basilica of Saint Willibrord and Abbey of Echternach, which dates back to the 7th century. The surrounding streets at the centre of the town are home to plenty of shops and restaurants, very few of which belong to international chains.. which means their offering is quite different to what you might find elsewhere. From delicious pies at the Irish-themed pub (with the not so Irish name Brostloapseekelchen) to equally delicious ice cream at Gelateria Venezia, and tonnes of other excellent eateries, you won't go hungry, either. There are also ample bars and restaurants with outdoor seating, perfect for the current heatwave.
Speaking of the heatwave, you can also go for a stroll through along Sure river - or hire a kayak or canoe and muscle your way from Dillingen to the heart of Echternach.
