What do Luxembourg's first female MP, first female journalist, and first Luxembourgish woman to gain a doctorate have in common? They've all made it on to a list of inspiring women pioneers in the Grand Duchy's history.
The Luxembourg government has published an inspiring list of female pioneers, ranging from women leading the way in entrepreneurship, to sports, art, and politics.
The list, which can be found here, features eight key figures in women's history in the Grand Duchy, including:
Barbe Peckels, Luxembourg's first female business owner;
Anne Beffort, the first Luxembourg woman to gain a doctorate;
Marguerite Thomas-Clement, the first (and only, for over a decade) female MP in Luxembourg;
Katrin C. Martin, one of the first women to work as a journalist in Luxembourg;
Madeleine Frieden-Kinnen, the first member of a cabinet in the Luxembourg government;
Elsy Jacobs, a notable competitive cyclist who won the first Women's Road World Championship;
Léa Linster, the first Luxembourgish chef (and only woman) to win the acclaimed Bocuse d'Or;
Su-Mei Tse, an accomplished artist in multiple disciplines, including music, photography, sculpture and video, among others.
Of course, the list is by no means exhaustive - despite being a tiny country, Luxembourg is full of women who inspire and empower others, both in the past and present. Perhaps you've heard of the lycée named for Aline Mayrisch, a women's rights campaigner and philanthropist known for her charitable work with the Red Cross? Or perhaps the more literary-minded of you might have come across Germaine Goetzinger, book prize winner and noted historian?
