Appearing on Howard Stern's SiriusXM satellite radio show on Wednesday, Crowe admitted it was a bit of a spur of the moment purchase.
We realise that this is the second drunken antics article this week, following on from the Polish chap who got somewhat over-refreshed and decided to drive a Soviet-era tank through town one night, but we couldn't resist sharing one more.
Appearing on Stern's show on Wednesday, Crowe said he was having a few drinks at DiCaprio's house when the latter mentioned that another dinosaur head had just come on the market that he 'really wanted, so we was trying to sell the one he already had.
Caught up in the moment, Crowe recalls saying "Well, I'll buy it", and DiCaprio offered it to him at the same price he'd paid — $30,000USD (about €26,500).
As for why he bought it... he admits it was partly the booze talking, but also said: "Part of the reason for buying it, is that when I did buy it around 2008, 2009, my kids, particularly my oldest were fascinated, into dinosaurs, so I said, 'Here you go, here's one for the playroom."
He later sold through Sotheby's as part of his divorce auction.
