Did you know that Luxembourg's residents speak 3.6 languages, on average?

This is according to Inspiring Luxembourg, who posted this nugget of information as part of their celebration of international mother language day.

Foreign languages - how Luxembourg compares

As can be seen from the map at the top of this article, Luxembourg residents speak more languages on average than any other country in the EU. The map uses data from the EU Open Data Portal.

Eurostat data from 2016 shows that Luxembourg's students come out on top in the European Union when it comes to learning foreign languages, as 100% of students learn two or more of them. In shared second place is France, Finland, Romania, and Estonia - all at 99%. Greece (1%) is at the bottom of the list, followed by Portugal (6%), Ireland (14%), Italy (25%), and Spain (28%).
