"Hi there, I'm glad you found me. My name is Ólafur Arnalds and I like to make music", so reads the introduction to the Icelandic composer's website.

There is no hint of irony in suggesting that this greeting is at odds with Ólafur's output. His music is at once glacial AND moving. It is hard not to get swept up in the majesty that is Only The Winds, and it is near impossible to resist the charm in his Grammy-nominated colab with Bonobo, Loom.

Despite claiming to not have, as yet, tasted Luxembourg air, Ólafur is heading back to the Grand Duchy for a show that you really do not want to miss.

Arnalds is an Icelandic multi-instrumentalist and producer, his style of blending strings and piano with loops and beats has seeped into the international conscious and he is one of the most well-respected and best regarded modern composers working today.

With a sound ranging from ambient/electronic to atmospheric pop, Arnalds' music has sound tracked popular UK crime-thriller Broadchurch and recent Apple TV+ thriller Surface, the Oscar-wining Nomadland and even feature in the Hunger Games series starring Jennifer Lawrence. This is another way of us telling you that even if you think you do not know of Ólafur's talents, you have probably heard them

He is also the former drummer for hardcore and metal bands Fighting Shit, Celestine - but that was a while ago now.
Steps had a wonderful chat with the sometimes shy, sometimes not shy at all musician during which, he, admitted to being "a shit pianist". Ólafur, of course, not Steps...that much was a given.

Part one of the interview is available here and part two via this link.

We even got Ólafur to be part of our No.1 Podcast Song 2, wherein we got one of the most precise answers yet.

Ólafur Arnalds plays at The Philharmonie on Friday 23 September.
