Avatar: The Way of Water has become the most-watched film in Luxembourg cinemas, according to Kinepolis Luxembourg.

Director James Cameron's follow-up to his 2009 smash hit Avatar has experienced global success since its release in December, and the film's reception in Luxembourg is no different.

Kinepolis reports that over 65,000 people have purchased tickets to see the film in the Grand Duchy to date, breaking the previous record set by 2019's The Lion King remake, which counted 61,307 spectators.
Globally, Avatar: The Way of Water has topped $2 billion in revenue. Only six films have reached this mark in history, three of which were made by the Canadian filmmaker (Avatar, Avatar 2 and Titanic).

Released 13 years after the first Avatar film, The Way of Water takes viewers back to the planet Pandora. Ten years after the events of the original film, the idyllic life of Jake Sully, Neytiri and their children is once again threatened by a non-governmental organisation that has come to plunder their resources.

Most popular films in Luxembourg

Avatar: The Way of Water could yet stretch its lead at the top of Luxembourg's most popular films as showings continue over the coming weeks.

After Avatar 2 and The Lion King, Frozen 2 is the third most popular film in Luxembourg with 57,745 viewers, followed by the most recent 007 outing No Time To Die (50,224 viewers). The top ten is rounded out by Avengers Endgame (50,085), Spider-Man: No Way Home (47,929), Joker (46,939), Top Gun: Maverick (45,503), Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (41,853) and homegrown film Superjhemp Retöms (41,691). The above records began in 2017.
