Fairies and witches, angels and demons, wizards and monsters. A good fantasy story takes you to another world where magic is not always light and gentle.

The Witcher – Netflix

The Witcher is a fantasy drama based on a series of books by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski.

Geralt of Rivia is the Witcher, a monster-hunter with magical abilities that allow him to kill supernatural beasts. As he moves from village to village, he finds work ridding the humans of those magical pests while resisting his clients attempts to use him for their political ends.

Cirilla “Ciri” is a princess on the run from the revolutionary forces that killed her parents and want to eliminate her in order to take over the throne.

Yennefer of Vengerberg is a witch who crosses paths with Geralt again and again, meetings which sometimes, but not always, end in a friendly way.

Going back and forth in time, the show weaves the different story lines linking the three people facing a common destiny.

The “Witcher” books were already the background of a successful series of videogames starting in 2007. Which means that the show had not only to meet the expectations of the readers, always a difficult endeavor, but those of the gamers as well.

Although the different time and storylines can be confusing and the reasons for the characters actions are a bit simplistic, all in all the series has done a good job putting together into a single tale what started out as a series of short stories.

The Witcher is available on Netflix.
