On Saturday evening, the Luxembourgish national team played its final game of the first round of pre-qualifying games for the 2023 world cup. The loss against Iceland means that Luxembourg is now out of the competition. The thrilling encounter ended with the narrow result of 86:84.

The Luxembourgish team enjoyed a good start to the game, with the first three-point shot by Alex Laurent landing in the net. However, Iceland managed to have the advantage at the end of the first quarter, the score being 29:23.

During the second quarter, the Icelandic team extended their lead even more, with Luxembourg struggling to score. Iceland on the other hand managed to land four out of five attempts from the three-point line within the last two and a half minutes before the break. The score stood at 57:43 when the quarter ended.

After the break, Luxembourg regained confidence and was able to score a number of three-pointers themselves, all ahead Ben Kovac. They were also sharper when defending and thus made it more difficult for Iceland's players to get into scoring positions. By the end of the third quarter, the score difference was narrowed down to two points, 71:69.

During the last quarter, the Luxembourgish team began struggling anew and Iceland extended its lead to nine points again quickly. Nevertheless, Luxembourg was not willing to give up, making the final minutes of the game thrilling and entertaining. Seconds before the end, Luxembourg went ahead by one point, only to have their hopes shattered by a final three-pointer from Iceland right before the clock ran out. The final score of the game thus stood at 86:84.
