German authorities confirm that an employee at a Moselle lock in Enkirch on Monday morning discovered a body in the river. The newspaper Trierischer Volksfreund initially broke the news that the gruesome discovery was made at 11.55am in the context of works on the lock.

Police believe that the body is likely that of a 48-year-old man from Piesport, who went missing on 12 January. The man in question disappeared after returning from a party in Wintrich, about 17km from Enkirch, with all search operations futile.

However, both the identity of the victim and the cause of death have yet to be confirmed, according to local reports.
