
CANACH FIRE - There was a major incident at a bus depot in Canach overnight. According to the fire and rescue services, a bus caught fire there around 2.40 am, injuring 3 people. There were 5 fire brigades on the scene, no further details are known at this time.
TAX BILLS - Luxembourg lawmakers are set to vote on two key tax bills this week, adjusting income tax brackets and setting a minimum taxation for large companies at 15%. Votes on the tax scale is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, in the final sitting of parliament before the Christmas recess.
WAR COMMEMORATION - The 79th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge was marked in the north of the country at the weekend. An important aspect of this year’s memorial ceremony was reflecting on the historical link between past events and ongoing wars and conflicts. Over 20,000 American soldiers lost their lives, and hundreds of civilians died during Hitler’s last attempt to gain ground against the Allied troops on the Western Front.
ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR - The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says Israeli airstrikes have killed 90 Palestinians in a single day in the Jabalia refugee camp. It is reported that many were killed during a strike on a residential block, housing 2 families. Israel says it is targeting terrorist infrastructure and is taking care to avoid civilians. There are growing calls for a ceasefire. The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on a new resolution calling for an “urgent and sustainable cessation of hostilities” in Gaza today.
NORTH KOREA MISSILE - The South Korean military says North Korea appears to have test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile with the potential capability of striking the United States, Seoul and Toyko. If confirmed, it would be the North’s 5th such launch in 2023, the largest number it’s carried out in a single year.
EU ENVIRONMENT - EU Environment ministers are meeting in Brussels today. They will seek to reach an agreement on regulating packaging and packaging waste, they will debate a proposal for the first-ever EU soil health law as well as establishing an integrated EU-wide forest monitoring system. Serge Wilmes will represent Luxembourg.
ATHLETICS - Luxembourg’s athlete Charel Grethen has set a new national record in the 10-kilometer road race. At the “Corrida de Houilles Elite Race” near Paris, he finished with a time of 29 minutes and 11 seconds, placing him fourth place. With this, he was a full 46 seconds faster than Bob Bertemes’ record set in 2022.
And David Lang has been named Tri-athlete of the Year at a ceremony at the Coque on Saturday night. It is the second time he has won the award. In the women, Jeanne Lehair came in first place. The athlete from Metz is, among other things, European champion, which is a first in Luxembourg’s triathlon history. And in the English Premier League, Arsenal are at the top of the table after beating Brighton 2-0 on Sunday, and Manchester United lifted the mood of crisis around manager Erik ten Hag by securing a battling point against Liverpool at Anfield with a 0-0 draw at Anfield. Liverpool now sit in 2nd place in the League.
