A huge sheet of snow came loose on Sunday and dragged down two skiers. Only one of them has been found as of yet.
Heavy snowfall in the Vosges resulted in unstable snowpacks.
Two cross-country skiers, both in their twenties, had left Hohneck at midday and were on the Alsatian side of the summit when a huge sheet of snow took them away.
One of the two skiers was found on Sunday but his companion is still missing. According to France Bleu Alsace, the missing person is 26 years. The young man who was found did not show serious injuries and was taken to hospital for check ups.
Thirty Haut-Rhin firefighters and 17 gendarmes, including soldiers from the PGM des Vosges, searched the area. Search operations were interrupted overnight but are due to resume this Monday morning.
For several days now, the authorities have been alerting to the risk of snowfall.
