After weeks of dropping numbers, Rheinland-Pflaz’ confirmed cases are again growing rapidly with 42 people in the district testing positive in the past 24 hours, according to reports from German regional radio broadcaster RPR1.
Most new infections in the Pfalz are regionally limited to the south.
In the past few days there have been increased infections in the area of the Free Evangelical Christian Community in Schwegenheim in the district of Germersheim - a nationwide faith group, which affects mainly people who come from the former Soviet Union.
The number of people who tested positive in the district rose by 14 to 42 on Wednesday. According to the district administration, 13 of the 14 new cases affected a family in which there was already a known infection. All have been placed under quarantine. “Our task is to identify and interrupt the chains of infection,” said a spokeswoman for the district.
Today, new test results from the environment are expected - and it could well be possible that the upper limit in the Germersheim district of 67 new infections will be exceeded within seven days.
A strict lockdown - as we know it from the first months of Corona - could then be the result.
It is unclear at this point whether this could only affect the municipality of Schwegenheim or even the entire district.
