Thick black smoke billowed over the widened A3 motorway on Tuesday afternoon after a lorry suddenly caught fire just a short distance from the Aire de Berchem.

The incident occurred at around 5.30pm on the Thionville–Luxembourg City carriageway. Commuters and cross-border workers heading home at that time witnessed the dramatic blaze on the opposite side of the motorway.

The first images showed a cabin completely engulfed in flames and a trailer largely destroyed, with no information yet on the type of cargo it was carrying.

Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene with several vehicles.

The CITA initially reported that the A3 was closed to all traffic heading towards the capital. A significant traffic jam had formed close to the new Q8 stations. Motorists were advised to take the Bettembourg exit, continue on the A13 to Foetz, and then join the A4 towards the city.

Shortly after 6pm, one lane was reopened for traffic heading into the city.
