Some 520,000 employees, self-employed workers, and voluntarily insured persons were affiliated to the Luxembourgish social security system in 2021.

This is an unprecedented figure, according to the annual report of the Joint Social Security Centre (CCSS). The latter generates an administrative budget of €44.8 million.

There were also people who did not pay into the social security system in 2021: nearly 7,200 members had to be forced to pay their contributions.

The contributions invoiced by the CCSS in 2021 amounted to €6.85 billion, a record high.

The CCSS' reception office was also kept busy: in 2021 it handled 210,000 calls, 160,000 e-mails, and 180,000 letters.

It should be noted that the CCSS has established a simplified administrative procedure for the affiliation, declaration of wages, contributions, etc. of persons employed by private households. There are four types of recognised activities: household work, childcare, au pairs, as well as assistance and care for dependent persons. In 2021, almost 12,700 people were affiliated to this scheme. More than 2,700 of these people care for the elderly or the disabled in their own homes.

In 2021, the CCSS processed 9.9 million wage declarations.
