Daycares in Luxembourg City are currently unable to meet demand due to a shortage of educators.
By 1 September 2022, 750 children were on a waiting list for a daycare spot, out of whom 108 had no alternative.
By now, additional educators have been recruited and demand has gone down, meaning there are 63 children left waiting for a daycare spot.
28 educator posts across 31 daycares are currently unoccupied. If these positions were filled, there would be room for an additional 300 children.
While the City of Luxembourg lacks the necessary staff, there is no infrastructural problem, which is more of an issue in other towns.
In Esch-sur-Alzette and Differdange, for instance, there are sufficient educators, but officials note that they still lack adequate rooms. Still, these municipalities also admit that it remains challenging to recruit enough staff members.
The Left's Luxembourg City faction questions the reasons for the recruitment issues, noting that the capital might not be as attractive as other places.
Colette Mart, school delegate on the council of aldermen, conveyed that many educators leaving the City take on jobs closer to their home. This way, they have a more comfortable work commute and can avoid parking issues in the City.
The municipality of Luxembourg City plans on counteracting the problem in proactive manner by introducing traineeships, which are hoped to raise interest in the educator profession and convince more young people of working in the capital.
