According to the latest weekly review, all the indicators are back on the rise and show that Covid-19 has regained ground over the past week in Luxembourg.

"For the time being, all is well as far as Covid-19 is concerned," said Minister of Health Paulette Lenert in an interview with the newspaper Tageblatt on Saturday.

The minister could not know it yet, but at the same time the coronavirus was once again gaining ground in Luxembourg. Last week (from 12 to 18 September) the number of people testing positive for Covid-19 "increased to 999 cases compared to 757 cases the week before", the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, the National Health Laboratory (LNS), and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) reveal in the latest weekly Covid-19 review.

As of 18 September, the number of active infections has increased to 2,066 from 1,795 on 11 September and the number of people who recovered from an infection has risen to 285,971 (from 285,245). The average age of those diagnosed with Covid-19 is 42.3 years.

There were two new deaths (average age 78) and six new patients were admitted to the standard care units of the country's hospitals, compared to five the previous week. One Covid-19 patient was in intensive care last week. The average age of Covid-19 patients is 49 years.

The number of PCR tests performed during the week increased from 5,144 to 5,653. In addition, there were 423 re-infections, representing 29.7% of all those tested positive, compared with 319 (29.6%) the previous week.

Positivity rate and incidence rate

The effective reproduction rate increased to 1.15 (1.08 the previous week), and the positivity rate on all tests performed (prescriptions, contact tracing) increased from 14.72% to 17.67%.

The incidence rate rose to 155 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over seven days, compared to 117 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the previous week.

Compared to the previous week, the incidence rate increases in the age groups 0-14 years (+45%), 45-59 years (+3%), 60-74 years (+85%), and 75+ (+171%). A decrease is recorded in the 15-29 (-1%) and 30-44 (-16%) age groups.

The lowest incidence rate is in the 75+ age group (129 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), while the highest incidence rate is recorded in the 30-44 age group (303 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).

Travelling abroad is the most frequent source of infection (27%), followed by the family circle (21%) and leisure activities (11%). The proportion of undetermined sources is decreasing (31%).

79% of the population vaccinated

1,428 doses were administered last week: 23 people received a first dose, 33 received a second dose, 103 people received a first booster, 1,251 received a second booster and 18 received a third booster, bringing the total number of vaccines administered as of 18 September to 1,290,474.
