On World Humanitarian Day, Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs Franz Fayot presented Luxembourg's new action plan, which proposes an increased budget for international support.

Luxembourg's new humanitarian action plan aims to provide support to partner countries through innovative and digital means. During the presentation, Fayot explained that every crisis needs a particular approach, which is why the new strategy has been designed to respond to various individual problems.

The politician from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) also drew attention to the fact that only about a third of the world's need for humanitarian aid is covered at the moment. Our support should be sustainable and inclusive as to not leave anyone behind, Fayot stressed.

The new action plan envisions a budget increase for the upcoming year, which would amount to €65 million.

Digitalisation will be a focal point as expertise in the field is already being gained through work in a Jordanian refugee camp. Fayot underlined that innovative and digital means will lead to more success than conventional methods, referring to the mobile and satellite-based telecommunications platform emergency.lu as an example.

To promote the next generation of such technically innovative solutions, the government will launch a contest in the private sector with the goal of creating another way to support the international community.

At the end of the presentation, Fayot explained that in the case of a general recession and limited budget, officials will have to manage with the means at hand.
