The students from the 2ième GIG class went to Bologna to compete against 25 countries at the ESA's CanSat Challenge.
12 schools from Luxembourg had originally qualified, but only the Lënster Lycée from Junglinster made it to the finals in Bologna.
The students from the 2ième GIG decided on engineering. The goal of the challenge is to build a small satellite with working electronics on board for measuring things such as humidity and temperature.
They started by designing the satellite on the computer in a 3D program, then it was printed on a 3D printer. Each member of the team had a specific task, such as calculations, the parachute or the electronics. At the event in Bologna, the satellite would be propulsed 1km high by a rocket, where it could execute its measurements.
Sadly, the suitcases containing their satellite didn't make it to its destination. The team had to improvise and were awarded an honorary prize for their efforts. The school wants to take part again next year, though it will have to recruit a new team as students are only allowed to take part once.
