Our colleagues from RTL 5minutes have compiled a list of useful things to remember before packing up the car for the summer holidays.
First, it is important to drive in calm and anticipatory manner. This helps reduce the risk of accidents and conserves petrol, which in return helps save money. The easiest way to achieve this is by activating cruise control, explained a motorist in conversation with our colleagues from RTL 5minutes.
Aerodynamics also play a role. A car needs more energy when windows are opened, and if the roof is loaded with goods, consumption may even go up by 20% to 30%.
It is also useful to check air pressure in the tyres of the vehicle that you intend to use for your travels. Heavy loads require more pressure, which is why people are advised to adjust their tyres accordingly.
Congestion
GPS systems can generally help detect traffic jams and propose alternative routes in due time. Motorists should also be aware of the fact that summer holidays have just started in Belgium, and France will follow next week before it is finally the turn of the Grand Duchy.
Brussels is thus already expected to struggle with congestion as of today. Next weekend will probably see a start to traffic jams all over France. Authorities have also issued a specific warning for the weekend of 30 July, when they expect France to see the peak of traffic jams for the summer period.
