Party president Francine Closener used the opportunity to highlight LSAP’s previous achievements: “Never has there been a social or societal reform in our country, nor any progress without LSAP being the driving force.”

Closener further talked about the significance of resisting populist tendencies, which have experienced a revival all over Europe in recent years. She also ensured that LSAP will not give up on its mission: “It is important for us to be reliable and realistic in our policies.”

Amir Vesali, co-president of the ‘Young Socialists’, expressed confidence that LSAP’s youth fraction can help their parent party become the strongest one in next year’s Chamber elections. Minister of Health Paulette Lenert meanwhile underlined that the values of LSAP have not lost in importance.

The official founding year of the party as it is known today is 1902. The name LSAP was however only taken on during the 1940s. The biggest political success of the party was the 33% of votes they received during the 1984 Chamber elections.

At the moment, LSAP provides six ministers, ten MPs, and 19 mayors.
