Minister for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development Carole Dieschbourg provided this information as part of her response to a parliamentary enquiry from MPs Max Hahn and Gusty Graas from the Democratic Party (DP).
In early February, hydrocarbon polluted the Moselle river on French territory. Analyses concluded that the Cattenom Nuclear Power Plant was responsible for the pollution. Sewage water from a non-nuclear section of the plant had leaked into the river.
In her response to the enquiry, Minister Dieschbourg confirmed that traces of pollution were subsequently found on Luxembourgish territory near Remich. After the incident, French authorities took the necessary measures to stop further pollution, a process that later analyses confirmed to have been successful.
Whether or not the pollution had an impact on flora and fauna cannot be determined yet. Nevertheless, Minister Dieschbourg reassured the MPs from the Democratic Party that any potential impact would have been small.
