RTL announced on Wednesday that the mayor of Bettembourg is set to replace Charles Lampers in the Council of State, but the names of other CSV candidates have just been revealed.

Our colleagues from RTL.lu have obtained access to a list which reveals the other candidates in the running to succeed Councillor Charles Lampers. The situation is somewhat awkward, since in addition to the announced candidacy of Laurent Zeimet, three other members of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) are also seeking to enter the Council of State.

Among the new candidates is the lawyer Claudine Konsbrück, a municipal councillor of the City of Luxembourg who now works at the Ministry of Justice. Also in the running is the young lawyer Henry De Ron, member of the CSV electoral district of the centre. The third and final candidate is Serge Sandt, an adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Sandt worked for several years under the former CSV Minister for Home Affairs Jean-Marie Halsdorf. In 2019, he was hired by Frank Engel, who has since left the party, as an advisor for legal and policy issues. Sandt was also a member of the 'Cercle Joseph Bech', which presented itself as an internal think tank.

The fourth candidate is the former journalist of the 'Luxemburger Wort', Laurent Zeimet, who is now head of the municipality of Bettembourg. The CSV parliamentary group had agreed on his candidacy, which usually means that the vote in the Chamber of Deputies is a mere formality. The position of mayor is compatible with that of member of the Council of State in Luxembourg.

A second post of Councillor of State remains to be filled, that of lawyer Martine Lamesch who resigned after only three years with the institution. The vacant position will also have to be filled by a candidate close to the CSV. This candidacy will first have to be validated by the government, which is theoretically a mere formality.

CSV President Claude Wiseler is currently sounding out several names and canvassing several people before the CSV national committee decides on the name of the person who will sit on the Council of State.
