In February, hospitalisations could rise to occupy 20 intensive care beds and 85 regular care beds, the task force says in its latest projection.

The latest report of the Covid-19 task force is a bit more optimistic than last week's. However, hospitalisations would strongly depend on which age groups are most affected and how many people are vaccinated. That's why it's especially important that vulnerable people are vaccinated and remain cautious in social interactions.

This week there is a 20% increase in new infections, compared to 23% the week before. Last week, there was an average of 2,307 cases per day. If the speed at which the virus spreads continues, we could reach a peak of 2,500 cases per day by mid-February.

The current development of the pandemic in Luxembourg would suggest that the Omicron variant is leading to fewer hospitalisations, as has also been observed in Denmark. However, the situation in the USA shows that there is still a risk that hospitals will become essential again. The fact that new infections due to the Omicron variant continue to rise could also lead to a significant number of people dropping out in various sectors.

The task force concludes that we should continue to adhere to hygiene measures, reduce social contact, and increase vaccination.
