The northeastern parts of the country were most affected by the increase, same as those Luxembourg City districts situated in a valley.
Patrick Goldschmidt, president of Sidor, explained how municipal workers in the capital were quickly overrun with demands for support, and eventually had to switch to helping to closest ones around them first. During the first day of work, they cleared away three tonnes of washing machines.
Officials expect that the operations will continue for some amount of time, given that there are people who are not even done clearing out their basements, while others are still away on holiday.
Goldschmidt further noted: "Last week, Sidor received a plus of 17 tonnes of bulky waste." He therefore appealed to people to start sorting their waste when they put it out for pickup, as this would significantly help fasten up the process.
