For some people, blood donations are vital. The coronavirus pandemic has further increased this need, but according to the Luxembourg Red Cross, not enough people are donating.
As the beginning of this year has not been the most generous in terms of blood donations, the Red Cross has had to renew its call once again in order to mobilise enough people. The non-profit also took the opportunity to look back at 2020.
In the midst of a health crisis, blood reserves play an important role for certain treatments as well as for all other patients in need.
In Luxembourg, 120 whole blood donations are needed every day for the treatment of certain patients in hospitals. The country can count on just over 13,000 donors, a figure that slightly decreased last year.
Red Cross staff take every precaution to ensure the safety of donors, and all health measures are strictly adhered to. Staff and volunteers must wear a mask at all times and disinfect their hands between appointments.
According to the Red Cross, no Covid-19 pathogens causing lung disease have been detected in the blood. There is therefore no risk in donating blood during the current coronavirus health crisis. Those interested who meet the required criteria can register via this website.
